What is Kirtan?

Kirtan, derived from the Sanskrit word 'kirtana' meaning "to praise or glorify", is a form of devotional singing rooted in ancient Indian traditions. It's essentially a call-and-response style of chanting sacred mantras, often accompanied by traditional Indian instruments like the harmonium, tabla, and cymbals. While deeply connected to Hinduism, specifically Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of devotion), kirtan can be embraced by people of any background, as the focus is on the communal experience and fostering a sense of connection with the divine or a higher power.

*This kirtan is intended to be non-denominational. Although the nature of kirtan includes chanting to deities, the belief is that we are honoring what they represent as a reflection of the various aspects and expressions of our human experience. Rather than something outside of ourselves.
